Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast has two famous names – and first-time visitors face exactly this question. Here is the honest answer about which resort suits which type of traveller.
The short answer
Sunny Beach is bigger, louder, cheaper and the first choice for party holidays and young groups. Golden Sands is more compact, greener and better groomed – ideal for families and couples. Both offer wide, gently sloping Blue Flag beaches.
Beach & water
Sunny Beach stretches over eight kilometres – there is space even in August. Golden Sands is shorter at 3.5 km but sits right next to a forested nature park. The water is shallow and child-friendly at both, around 25°C in July and August.
Prices
Dinner with a drink near the beach starts at around €12–15, beach beer from €3. Sunny Beach averages 10–20% cheaper, with more variation in quality.
Day trips worth taking
The UNESCO old town of Nessebar is 15 minutes from Sunny Beach; Varna with its dolphinarium is 20 minutes from Golden Sands. Add boat trips with dolphin watching and jeep safaris into the Balkan Mountains.
Verdict
Party, budget, long beaches: Sunny Beach. Family, nature, shorter distances: Golden Sands. They are only 90 minutes apart – a split holiday works perfectly.
