Sofia is one of Europe’s most underrated capitals – and one of its cheapest. Roman ruins beneath the pedestrian zone, golden church domes against the Vitosha panorama, and a serious coffee culture.
Day 1: The historic centre
Start at the Serdika complex: metro construction uncovered ancient Serdica, and today you walk straight through excavated Roman streets. Five minutes away stands the Rotunda of St George (4th century), the city’s oldest building, followed by the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its gilded domes. For lunch, head to Vitosha Boulevard – trying banitsa is mandatory. Evenings: the craft beer scene around Shishman Street.
Day 2: Mountain or monastery
Option A – Vitosha: the city’s mountain starts at its edge; take the lift to 1,800 m and hike with panoramic views. Option B – Rila Monastery: Bulgaria’s most famous monastery (UNESCO) lies two hours away – the striped arcades and frescoes are a highlight of a lifetime, easiest as an organised day tour.
Prices & practicalities
Flights from many European cities often under €100, solid 4-star rooms from €60–80 in the centre, public transport under €1 per ride – contactless. Since Bulgaria adopted the euro, no currency exchange is needed.
FAQ
Is Sofia safe? Yes – the centre is lively in the evenings; normal big-city caution is enough.
