Ski Holiday in Bansko: Alpine Feeling at Half the Price

THE WONDERFUL HILLS OF BANSKO

If “skiing in Bulgaria” makes you raise an eyebrow, you have never been to Bansko: modern lifts, a 16 km valley run, a medieval old town – and prices that make Alpine skiers look twice.

The ski area

Around 75 km of slopes between 990 and 2,600 m, mostly red runs – ideal for cruisers and advancing beginners. Season: mid-December to mid-April. Weak spot: the gondola from town is crowded between 8:30 and 10 am – ride earlier or take the shuttle.

What does a week cost?

6-day ski pass from about €300 (40–50% below Alpine level), equipment rental from €15/day, group lessons from €35/day, 4-star spa hotel with half board from €70–90/night for two, hearty mehana dinners from €12–15.

Après-ski & old town

Bansko can party, but its trump card is the old town: cobblestones, 150-year-old stone houses, mehanas with open fires and wine from Melnik. Plus thermal springs in nearby Banya and Dobrinishte – 36°C outdoor pools with mountain views.

Getting there

Fly to Sofia, then a 2-hour transfer (shuttles from about €20). Alternative: Thessaloniki, also about 2.5 hours.
