Bansko sits in the Pirin Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and is Bulgaria’s largest and most modern ski resort. Most runs are red – ideal for cruisers and intermediates – plus blue nursery slopes and a few challenging blacks. Lift passes, ski hire and ski school cost far less than in the Alps.

Flights to Sofia

The nearest major airport is Sofia (SOF), about 160 km or just over two hours’ drive from Bansko. For the last leg, take a transfer, the bus or a rental car.

Bansko tips

Best time to goThe season usually runs from mid-December to early April. From March, the gondola and slopes get much quieter.
Beat the gondola queueThe gondola opens at 8 am. Arrive just before, or buy your lift pass the evening before, and you often save half an hour or more.
Lift pass pricesAn adult day pass cost around €59 in the 2025/26 season. Prices for 2026/27 are usually published in November on banskoski.com.
Ski down to townIn the afternoon, the long ski road takes you all the way back to the lift station – no queuing for the gondola down.
Après-ski & tavernsThe mehanas in the Old Town serve kavarma, banitsa and Melnik wine – often with live music.
